Dr. Montessori originally created the Time Line of the Centuries in the classroom by using three sets of Golden Thousand Chains. We have prepared printed replicas of the Golden Thousand chains because most classrooms today are not equipped with three sets of long Bead Chains. Once the chain strips are laid out, end to end, show the students where the “year zero” is located. Place the symbolic card of the “year zero” one hundred beads before the end of the first Thousand chain. This is the time from which people in the western world decided go count the years. Explain the meaning of B.C.E., the years before the starting point of counting, and C.E., the years from point “zero” to the present. Invite the children to bring a box of wooden squares from the Golden Bead Bank. Each square represents a hundred years or one century. Count by tens and as you get to each hundred, place a square to mark the passing of centuries. It will take 21 squares to get to the 21st century. Show the children how to find the exact year in which we live by simply counting each bead after 2000.
